Worship Sandwich
Tonight at our leadership meeting of the church plant we had a lot of discussion about the form that our Sunday service takes. We are looking at continuing to serve our current members (traditional),
ÂÂ
to reach out to those who are seeking and those who are not even at the point of seeking (Cafe Church), and our Little Fishes and Big Fish time for kids up to 10 and their parents/grandparents etc (www.little-fishes.org) .
One thing that was raised was the ‘form’ that all these should take. A concern was raised that we try to use a traditional ’sandwich’ form of worship (hymn/song-prayers-hymn/song-reading-hymn/song-prayers-song-message-song), which needs to be rethought.
The point was made that there
has to be some form of order, some form of layers, thick or thin. What format should this ’sandwich take’?
Could it be in the round?
Or could be an open sandwich which changes from week to week?
When I looked for these images I was overwhelmed by the many different sandwich options there are. They all look so mouthwatering, but which is the most appropriate? Which will satisfy and feed us best?

lol - recently I asked the leadership of one of my churches to approve a once monthly service to be denoted ‘NTS’. short for… wait for it… ‘Not the Sandwich’! The trouble is that while I was on holiday the first of these happened and a visiting preacher from another church in the area lead it in a labyrinth format. This was received by some about as well as a brussel sprout and lime jello sandwich would be. One woman later told me she thought the layout reminded her of a seance! The thing is, although from what I know of the preacher, and of labyrinth themed worship it was very well thought through and authentic and offered opportunity for worship in a different way BUT, some people just like cheese in their sandwiches.
No accounting for undeveloped taste but all the best with trying to develop a discerning palate amongst those you serve.
My thoughts are with you. Just don’t go for the pickled eggs.
